Fino al 31 Maggio, qwatz ospita l’artista di Singapore Charles Lim Yi Yong.

Charles Lim è nato a Singapore nel 1973 dove vive e lavora. Ha studiato alla Central Saint Martins e il Chelsea Collage of Art and Design (Londra), mentre gareggiava a livello professionale nella squadra nazionale di vela per Singapore (1992 – 2000).

Il lavoro di Lim riflette sulle reciprocità tra uomo e ambiente nell’investigare le relazioni tra ordini sistemici e di potere, siano essi materiali o intangibili, che vengono a crearsi tra di essi. Convenzionali paradigmi spaziali di contenimento vengono decostruiti nel rivelare le fragilità e le inconsistenze di strumenti di controllo sia virtuali che fisici. Nel 2001 ha fondato il collettivo di net-art tsunamii.net con Tien Wei Woon e Melvin Phua, un team collaborativo che ha prodotto tecnologie, e con esse relative esperienze, a disprovare  la natura immateriale ed eterea dello spazio della rete. Con lo scioglimento del gruppo nel 2004, Lim si è imbarcato in una serie di esperimenti narrativi sotto il titolo Seastories, che integrano fotografia, video e performance. Queste sequenziali attuazioni si intrecciano alla storia e alle politiche regionali di Singapore – lo stato isola – nel sovvertire gli ordini topografici di terre ed acque e la conseguente concettualizzazione dell’idea di ‘confine’ in una sinuosa cinematografia di cicli di vita, degrado e rigenerazione.

Lim ha ricevuto importanti premi tra cui il JCCI Art Award nel 2002 e il President’s Young Artists Award nel 2005. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato in diversi contesti internazionali, di mostre e istituzioni tra cui Documenta 11, (2002), Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt, Berlino (2005), Manifesta 7 e la Shanghai Biennale entrambe nel 2008, e la Singapore Biennale nel 2001. I suoi corti sono stati presentati al Rotterdam Film Festival (2010), il Tribeca Film Festival (2011, 2012) e il Festilval del Cinema di Venezia (2011) dove ha ricevuto una menzione speciale dalla giuria per il suo All the Lines Flow Out (2011).

Unfill May 31, qwatz will host the artist Charles Lim, from Singapore.

Part of the project “The Human Factor” curated by Beatrice Leanza, Charles Lim Yi Yong was born in Singapore in 1973 where he currently lives and works. He studied at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea Collage of Art and Design (London), while serving as a professional sailor for the Singapore National Sailing team between 1992 and 2000.

Lim’s work expounds upon the mutuality between man and environment to investigate the interrelation of material and intangible systems of order and power created wherein. Conventional spatial paradigms of containment are deconstructed to reveal the fragilities and inconsistencies of both virtual and physical instruments of control.  In 2001 he  co-founded the net-art collective tsunamii.net with Tien Wei Woon and Melvin Phua, a collaborative team that generated technologies, and relevant experiences, probing the ethereal, immaterial nature of the internet. As the group disbanded in 2004, Lim embarked on an ongoing series of narrative experiments employing photography, video and performance under the title Seastories. Set to conflate the idea of borders by reversing the geography of the sea and the land, these progressive enactments reference the regional politics of Singapore, the island state, as they take shape in a sensuous cinematography of life cycles, decay and regeneration.

Lim has received important awards among which the JCCI Arts Award in 2002 and the President’s Young Artists Award in 2005. His work has been presented in international large scale exhibitions and institutions such as Documenta 11 (2002), Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt, Berlin (2005), Manifesta 7 and the Shanghai Biennale both in 2008, and the Singapore Biennale in 2001. His short movies have been screened at the Rotterdam Film Festival (2010), the Tribeca Film Festival (2011, 2012) and the Venice Film Festival (2011) where he received a special mention for the work All the Lines Flow Out (2011).

Fino al 30 Aprile, qwatz ospita l’artista giapponese Koki Tanaka.

Uno dei protagonisti della mostra “The Human Factor” curata da Beatrice Leanza (BAO Atelier – Pechino), durante la sua permanenza romana Koki Tanaka svilupperà la ricerca preliminare per realizzare un lavoro da presentare all’interno del progetto, in occasione della prossima edizione della fiera ROMA: The Road to Contemporary Art.

La sua ricerca invita a riconsiderare la maniera in cui guardiamo al mondo ordinario di oggetti e azioni, e alle accidentali relazioni che universalmente instauriamo con il nostro ambiente materiale e fisico. La sua pratica artistica è caratterizzata da processi performativi, che diventano materiali costituenti di articolate installazioni. Tanaka popola il suo universo e le sue opere di configurazioni imprevedibili, attraverso decostruzioni ingegnose e inaspettate.

Nato a Tochigi in Giappone nel 1975, vive e lavora fra Tokyo e Los Angeles. Rappresenterà il Giappone alla Biennale di Venezia 2013. I suoi lavori sono stati esposti al Palais de Tokyo ed in numerosi altri contesti internazionali tra cui il Witte de With di Rotterdam e lo Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts di San Francisco nel 2011, Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou, e il Taipei Fine Arts Museum nel 2009, la Biennale di Gwangju del 2008, la Fondation d’entreprise Ricard 2007, il Mori Art Museum Tokyo nel 2006, la Galleria d’arte Moderna di Bologna nel 2004. Le sue opere sono collezionate in diversi musei giapponesi tra cui il MOT (Museum of Contemporary Art), il FRAC Champagne-Ardenne in Francia, e l’ Asian Society and Museum di New York.

Until April the 30th, qwatz will host the Japanese artist Koki Tanaka.

Selected as one of the artists participating to the project “The Human Factor” curated by Beatrice Leanza (BAO Atelier – Beijing), during his stay at qwatzKoki Tanaka will develop preliminary research for works to be featured in the exhibition presented in occasion of the 2012 art fair ROMA: The Road to Contemporary Art.

His works asks to reconsider the way we look at the world of ordinary objects and actions, and the accidental relations which we ‘universally’ behold with our material surroundings and physical environments. This artist’s practice is characterized by performative processes informing not only the coming together of complex installations but becoming also their constitutive materials. Tanaka populates his world and his art works with unexpected configurations, engaging unusual and original dispositives of deconstruction.

He was born in Tochigi, Japan, in 1975; he lives between Tokyo and Los Angeles. Hi will represent Japan at the Venice Biennal 2013. His work has been exhibited in different international context as the Witte de Witte in Rotterdam and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, in 2011; Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou, and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, in 2009; the Gwangju Biennal in 2008; the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard in 2007; the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, in 2006; the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna, in 2004. Masashi Echigo, IMMANENCE_25 settembre – 20 novembre 2010: IMMANENCE è il progetto che Masashi Echigo ha realizzato per la Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna di Roma, in collaborazione con la galleria e x t r a s p a z i o, e curato da Angelandreina Rorro. “L’installazione, posizionata sulla scalinata d’ingresso e parte del giardino antistante la Galleria Nazionale, si relaziona con il museo e la sua identità – luogo della memoria e archivio oggettuale della storia dell’arte degli ultimi due secoli – attraverso la costruzione di un’opera che è  insieme fisica e mentale. Partendo dagli elementi che ha tratto dal caos Masashi trova un nuovo approccio creativo come artista e suggerisce un’altra possibilità di riflessione all’osservatore contemporaneo.” Angelandreina Rorro

Masashi Echigo, STORIES_27 settembre – 15 novembre 2010: la mostra STORIES, che Emilia Giorgi a curato per la galleria e x t r a s p a z i o, raccoglie una serie di opere di Masashi Echigo, nate dalla sua analisi della città di Roma durante la residenza a qwatz.

“Masashi Echigo è solito studiare e analizzare, attraverso lunghe passeggiate esplorative, la città in cui andrà a costruire la sua opera. Accompagnato dagli incontri con persone comuni o esperti che possono indirizzare o ispirare le sue ricerche, colleziona sistematicamente le sue vedute, le emozioni, le suggestioni del viaggio, scattando fotografie e cercando ‘indizi’, oggetti trovati, o materiali presi semplicemente in prestito. L’archivio così formato trova nella mente dell’artista nuove configurazioni che, di volta in volta, vengono presentate al pubblico delle sue mostre attraverso opere scenografiche in equilibrio costante tra arte e architettura.” Emilia Giorgi.

Masashi Echigo, IMMANENCE_25 September – 20 November 2010: in collaboration with the e x t r a s p a z i o gallery Masashi Echigo realised the project IMMANENCE for the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. “The installation, both a physical and mental construction, positioned on the steps leading up to the main entrance and spilling over into part of the garden next to the National Gallery, connects with the gallery and its identity – a site containing memories of the past and an archive of objects from the history of art over the past two centuries. Beginning with the elements that the artist has plucked from chaos, Masashi has developed a new approach to creativity which prompts the contemporary observer to explore new possible ways of thinking.” Angelandreina Rorro, curator of the project.

Masashi Echigo, STORIES_27 September – 15 November 2010: the exhibition STORIES, curated by Emilia Giorgi for the e x t r a s p a z i o gallery, brings together a series of work by Masashi Echigo, that have grown from his analysis of the city of Rome during his qwatz residence.

“Masashi Echigo studies and analyses the city while out on long explorative strolls. These observations then become the bedrock of his work. Accompanied by ordinary people or experts who may direct or inspire his research, he systematically collects views, emotions, and impressions during his trip, snapping photos, eking out ‘clues’, picking up objects or simply borrowing materials. Slowly the archive takes on different forms in the artist’s mind. And now and then they are presented to the visitors of his exhibitions as stage-like pieces that span art and architecture.” Emilia Giorgi.

L’approccio curatoriale di Jennifer Teets incrocia la ricerca di artisti contemporanei con la storia, il design, la sperimentazione formale e le teorie sociali. Nel caso di “Turning Room” l’indagine inizia a Villa d’Este, a Tivoli, dove nei giardini è conservato l’unico gioco d’acqua Kircheriano ancora funzionante.

Durante la residenza, Jennifer Teets realizzerà una presentazione/performance pubblica presso la Fondazione Giuliani di Roma, per articolare i risultati della prima fase di ricerca.

I nostri obbiettivi sono:

• Favorire il confronto e lo scambio locale e internazionale nel campo dell’arte contemporanea;
• Offrire al territorio romano l’occasione di collaborazioni mirate con professionisti riconosciuti, sulla base di interessi specifici, legati alle attività dei singoli interlocutori;
• Utilizzare fattivamente l’arte come strumento di informazione, promozione e innovazione;
• Ampliare il pubblico interessato all’arte contemporanea tramite mostre, incontri, proiezioni e workshop.
